YouTube Favorites

Here is a group of some videos on YouTube that are have quite a few views, and are just random awesome musical goodness.

First is Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy being played on a theremin. Theremins are pretty cool. You control the pitch and volume of it by moving your hand toward and away from the two metal rods.

Next is this little tune called Ievan Polkka. I really don’t know much about it, but the quartet performing it is called Loituma. The song is Finnish and they are Finnish as well. Beware, this will be in your head all day!

Next on the list is this neat little Cadbury chocolate commercial. So very random, love the eyebrows and the balloon solo at the end.

Finally, it’s time for some abounding excitement! At Space Camp all kind of awesome happened! Brent Simon rocks the synthesizer on this one expressing his good memories of Space Camp. It’s even got subtitles to help you memorize the song, sweet.

Pet Shop Boys

Lately I’ve been pretty into the Pet Shop Boys. Neil Tennant’s voice is so soothing and 80’s-esque. They’ve continued to make music, which I hadn’t known about until just last year. I’m still discovering things that aren’t so new from them, but that are new to me. Apparently, they’ve got a new album due out March 23 called Yes. I’m pretty excited about that.

Here are a couple videos, since I’ve been real into posting music videos lately, for your enjoyment. The first is Flamboyant. The video has great Asian entertainment videos in it. I love the performing style of re-creating different activities. The way they do the slow motion and camera angle changes is brilliant! So enjoy it, along with the song:

Next is a song I just discovered through Pandora this morning on my Goodbye station on Pandora. The song is appropriately titled We’re The Pet Shop Boys. It’s apparently Robbie Williams with The Pet Shop Boys. They slip a little chorus line from an older song you may recognize in there. It’s another great soothing not-quite-80’s sounding song. Love it!

Red House

A few years back, my Dad had been watching the DVD of the Fender Stratocaster’s 50th anniversary. The concert featured a number of great guitar players, and the performances were mixed in quality. He sat me down and showed me some highlights, then he said to just sit back and enjoy this, which invitation I extend to you:

Yeah, well done Gary Moore, well done. Neither of us had heard of him, but man, that was one of the greatest covers I’ve ever seen. The man can play a mean blues guitar. I love the part around 5-8 minutes where he breaks it down and just works the guitar as it was meant to be used.

That’s all for now, I recommend watching that video on occasion, as it still gives me goosebumps every time I take 10 minutes to view it. I think Jimi would be proud to see his song treated with such respect.

Brad Sucks – I Don’t Know What I’m Doing

I discovered Brad Sucks through Pandora a while back. I think I may have heard it on the The Beta Band station. The song that got me hooked was “Making Me Nervous” which is the first track on his album I Don’t Know What I’m Doing. His music is great, and best of all, you can legally get it for free! I’ll explain more below, but for the anxious types, here’s the music video for “Making Me Nervous”:

Brad Sucks is an open source artist. For those unfamiliar with open source, it means that all the files and source code (for programs, in this case, it’s the songs broken down into the different audio parts) are available at no cost to the public. Brad Sucks offers all his source code, if you will, on his site with the only request being that you share your remixes with everyone at his site. There have been a whole lot of takers on that offer; check them out at his Remixes page.

Okay, enough dancing around, on to the review! As you’ve probably heard by now, via that video above, “Making Me Nervous” is an awesome song. It’s got a kind of mellow funk to it, and has a bass line that encourages at the least a bit of a head bob. The rest of the album keeps the same feel to it, with some slower songs in the mix. “Fixing My Brain” is another of my favorites on the album. It’s got a feel to it that would work well with a relaxing drive home from a rough day at work perhaps.

The album has 12 tracks, but still clocks in at a hair over 40 minutes in length. You can download the tracks for free directly from his site. There are a number of options for your grubby hands on I Don’t Know What I’m Doing. You can get the songs for free at 128kbps, buy them for any price (yes, even free if you feel alright about that) at 192kbps, or even get them in FLAC format for what looks like a minimum of 50 cents, or a maximum of over a billion dollars, sweet! You can also buy the physical CD for a minimum of $5.

So get on over to his site and get his music, there’s no excuse not to, really. Get it all here.

The Octupus Project – Music is Happiness

White clothing, a disco ball, a hamster (I think it’s a hamster, maybe a gerbil, some sort of rodent), a theremin, retro digital graphics, and destruction. What more could you want? Well, perhaps a great jam session to go with all of that. Here you go:

You Have to Synthesize

I was just going through my massive Unorganized music folder and happened upon a couple of Kompressor albums. Kompressor is a dude from Ohio who makes fantastic German electronica style music. It’s quite entertaining, mostly. Enjoy the video called You Have to Synthesize.

Obsessions

Found a pretty cool song the other day. It is a remix done by Pink Stallone, and here tis (it starts out quietly, so hang in there, let it build):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The original song, Obsessions, is by Marina & The Diamonds. Here’s the video for that, which is also pretty good stuff:
