They Came From…

Music can make or break a movie or any type of film. I’ve seen some mediocre movies that seem like great movies simply because of the score (soundtrack). I’ve also seen a couple movies that I think could have been pretty good, but the music just left me a bit unfulfilled. One particular movie that happened with is MirrorMask. The movie is visually stunning and has a decent fantasy type of plot with pretty weird characters. The trailer had some pretty good electronic, ethereal kind of music to set the right mood. When I got the movie and watched it, the actual music in the movie was really shallow, and if I remember right (it’s been a couple years now), it kind of had a weird jazz type of feel to it, which completely set off the mood of the movie. Here’s the trailer for those curious:

An example of a movie with great music, and a story line that doesn’t really grab the attention (although it becomes very strong while watching the movie) is The Weather Man with Nicholas Cage. Here’s a little clip from that movie with some quality music to set the perfect mood:

Anyway, on to my real point. There is a trailer for an upcoming snowboard video where the music makes an already incredible looking video so much more powerful. I still get goosebumps watching it. Check it out, the song is Aqua Vitae by Armen Hambar and the trailer is for a video called They Came From…. (Click through on the Vimeo link to watch in HD)

And now, here is another trailer for the same movie by Factor Films. Notice how the change in music gives it a pretty different feel altogether. Kind of cool I think. This song is It’s What I Want by Röyksopp.

And if you’re still reading this, here’s a pretty cool one minute video of Michael Jordan that also features Aqua Vitae.

Simple Minds – Real Life

Simple Minds - Real LifeI frequently find myself listening to this album when I’m looking for some good background music while doing some work on the computer. I think it could fit in the category of non-mood-specific music, if that works.

Simple Minds has been around for a long time, and I think this is possibly their greatest work. Their song Don’t You (Forget About Me) was their biggest hit, and is a fun pop song. This album has a richer feel to it and a couple real good semi-emotionally charged tracks. It has a similar feel to it as Welcome to Wherever You Are by INXS; another of my favorite vintage albums.

Let the Children Speak is one of the powerhouse tracks. A lot of volume does this song plenty of good. Banging On the Door is such an epic song that it has its own intro. It builds up with some distant piano and ghostly sounds, then picks up nicely into a head-bobbing groove in the main track. The final track of the album, When Two Worlds Collide combines much of what makes the whole album good, into one song. It’s got a low key underlying groove with some great vocals on top of the airy sound.

As this is my first full album review on here, I’m not sure how to end things. I’m a fan of rating systems, so I think I may take it upon myself to employ one here. Not sure how I’ll do it in the future, but I think I’m going to base it on a scale of 0 to 100. Anything by Celine Dion being 0 and for the 100, well, we’ll just have to wait and see! Why 100? I’ll tell ya why! I’ve never understood using a 10.0 scale, when two or three numbers are being typed anyway; why throw in the decimal point? More typing is all that means!

I’m going to give this album a solid:

80 out of 100

Yeah, could’ve just said 8, but I’ll use the single digits sometime.

Lykke Li – I’m Good, I’m Gone

Over the past week I’ve been a bit obsessed with a song. I’m Good, I’m Gone by Lykke Li, yet another great Swedish band. Good work Sweden!

So, here are a few videos of the same song. First is the awesome/weird music video of the original song:

Next is a video from a long series of music videos shot in cabs. Pretty cool little thing called Black Cab Sessions. It’s a nice clean trimmed down version of the song. I like it because you can hear more of Lykke Li’s voice, which is pretty amazing. Update: Scratch that, turns out I can’t embed this video, so go ahead and click below to see it.

And finally, there’s a third video that you’ll have to click through to YouTube to see, as embedding has also been disabled on this video. Apparently there was a Swedish music award show happening, and backstage some creativity happened and out came a pretty cool acoustic version of the song including musicians such as Robyn, Adam & Bebban (Shout Out Louds), Daniel (The Concretes), Lars (Laakso) and Mikael (Hjalmar). I just copied and pasted that from the description. :)

Tribute to Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson lived a good life. Say what you will, the man had some serious talent. This video is a pretty good little mash-up of some of the good things he did. At times, it gets a bit much, and your head may want to explode, but give it a look. Thanks for all the good stuff Michael.
