Happy Mother’s Day from John Lennon, Danzig, and Pink Floyd

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you Mothers out there! Here is a trio of songs entitled Mother. The Pink Floyd video is from a VHS but has sound dubbed over the top from the live concert CD, so the sound quality is great, but the sync gets off a bit. Enjoy!

Gabby La La

Here’s a weird one for ya! Lately I’ve been listening to Gabby La La‘s album, Be Careful What You Wish For. At first listen, or even glimpse, one might be quick to think that she is just a strange person who sings kids songs or something. I’d argue she’s much different than what you may first think. So go ahead, click play over there, and have a listen as you read this.

I first heard of Gabby when I saw her open for Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains. She was a solo act, and performed with her sitar, theramin, loop machine, and accordion. Her tunes and beats were very original, and in her huge pink wig and large sunglasses, I found her very intriguing. She’s got a style all her own, and is a very talented musician. She sings in a real high voice, which fits right in with her quirky little songs. After her portion of the show, she joined in with Les Claypool, Buckethead, Brain, and Bernie Worrell and was part of the band for the rest of the show.

Some of the songs you may quickly find yourself tapping your foot to are Backpack, Butter and Eggs (see video below), and Be Careful What You Wish For. The album demonstrates her wide variety of musical talent. Golden Flea is heavy on the sitar, which she plays incredibly in live shows.

So check out her stuff, I think some of you will really like it, I do! Now for some videos.

First, we have a live performance in her home town of Petaluma, CA. She is playing Butter and Eggs. You will see how well she performs and isn’t afraid to do weird things to get the audience involved, like making chicken noises.

And this next one is a really well made music video. I’m not sure if it’s the official video, or even who made it, but the song is Elf.

Mario Medley

Just a quick post for today. This is a video I watch from time to time. Always puts me in a good mood. How can Mario music not cheer anybody up? He starts out with a blindfold on, then cranks up the awesome dial to 11. See if you can pick out which game each song is from. I believe he covers music between the first NES Super Mario Bros. up to Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo.

Terrible Tuesday Shreds

There are a bunch of videos out there with this theme, and I suppose I’ll share more from time to time. The first time my friend, Ben, showed me the Clapton video I about wet my pants from laughing so hard. I’ve found, however, that not everybody finds the humor in the videos. So if you don’t think it’s funny, well then that’s just too bad.

First off we bring to you Eric Clapton, one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Enjoy the new mix of his live performance!

Awesome? Yeah. Now we’ve got one that may actually sound better than the audio that was really being produced by the band. This one features Creed. Oh man, just typing the name of the band made me feel all dirty inside. Enjoy!

Sia

Sia is an Australian singer with an incredible voice. She’s got a unique style going that I love. When she talks, she has a cute, girly voice and giggles a lot. As soon as she begins singing, her voice transforms into something rich, full bodied, and powerful. That mixture reminds me a bit of Norah Jones, who also seems to have a dainty voice when speaking, but can really belt it out during songs.

Sia has been on records and tours with Zero 7, a great band from Mother England. Also on a tour with them was José Gonzales; oh man I wish I could have seen that show. Anyway, Sia has four albums I think, not too sure. I’m going to post a couple videos below to give you a sample of her awesomeness.

First off is my favorite song of hers called Breathe Me. The video is pretty impressive. If I remember right, all of those Polaroids were actually taken and used to make the video. You can see her goofy personality in the first bit of the video when she’s sporting the storm trooper helmet. Even in such a sad/emotional type of song, she shows her fun personality.

Alrighty. Now there is a nine part video collection on YouTube of Sia performing in the studio of KCRW in Los Angeles with Nic Harcourt as host. I’ll put a video below of one song, but I recommend watching all the songs and the nine minute interview. By now, it is probably apparent that I’ve got a bit of a thing for Sia, she is cute and quite attractive, and that voice! Well anyway…

This is The Girl You Lost to Cocaine. The beginning has a bit of the last part of Breathe Me, then it picks up into this more uptempo song. This really shows the power of her voice. She seems to be one of the rare singers with perfect pitch and rhythm. Enjoy!

Lykke Li – I’m Good, I’m Gone

Over the past week I’ve been a bit obsessed with a song. I’m Good, I’m Gone by Lykke Li, yet another great Swedish band. Good work Sweden!

So, here are a few videos of the same song. First is the awesome/weird music video of the original song:

Next is a video from a long series of music videos shot in cabs. Pretty cool little thing called Black Cab Sessions. It’s a nice clean trimmed down version of the song. I like it because you can hear more of Lykke Li’s voice, which is pretty amazing. Update: Scratch that, turns out I can’t embed this video, so go ahead and click below to see it.

And finally, there’s a third video that you’ll have to click through to YouTube to see, as embedding has also been disabled on this video. Apparently there was a Swedish music award show happening, and backstage some creativity happened and out came a pretty cool acoustic version of the song including musicians such as Robyn, Adam & Bebban (Shout Out Louds), Daniel (The Concretes), Lars (Laakso) and Mikael (Hjalmar). I just copied and pasted that from the description.

Terrific Tuesday

This Tuesday brings you something a bit different. In the past, I’ve done Terrible Tuesdays, but today we’re going with a Terrific Tuesday! Check out the awesomeness that is this one man band in the streets somewhere in Croatia. He’s got a great song going as he walks down the street. Pretty cool how he didn’t let the camera bother his sweet performance.

Also, I think this might actually be Jeremy Piven, or Cheeeeese from Old School.

Electric Picnic 2009

Oh man! I love a good music festival, and I just stumbled across one that may be the best in the world this year. The list of bands I’d quite like to see includes Röyksopp, Whitest Boy Alive, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Sugarhill Gang, Okkervil River, Madness, Marina & The Diamonds, MGMT, Zero 7, Orbital, and even Flock of Seagulls! Such a great lineup! Now I just need to get a lot more money, a ticket to Europe, and I’m good to go!

The Sounds US Tour 2009

The Sounds are a Swedish band who have released two albums and have a third due to release in June 2009. Maja Ivarsson is the lead singer, and has a pretty recognizable voice. It’s not quite raspy, and I’m not sure what it is, but I dig it. How was that for a great description?

Anyway, they’ve got some quality music, great for listening to when you want to get some energy flowing through your ears. They just started their massive US tour where they’ll start in the Midwest, then on to California, then across the Southern states to where I’m at in Florida, then over to Europe for a bit. They finish things off with a long stay jumping all over California.
